One of the new fruits I have come to apreciate here are called "Little grapes" (although they are not little) or "Jungle grapes".
These Uvitas or Uvas de Monte (the names in Spanish) grow in a big tree, not a vine, look a lot like regular grapes.
They are green and dark purple in colour and very juicy and sweet.
They only have on big seed, more like a pit in many ways, in them.
You cannot eat the skin because it's harmful and also very sandpaper like in texture.
While eating you need to be careful and peel the fruit so you will not end up with a bleading toungue.
Although the fruit is well worth a little bleading.
Those look good. Never tried them before. Very unique!
ReplyDeleteI have never heard of this fruit before. I would love to try them.

Huh, they will make our gums bleed if they hit it.. I like grapes, and would definitely try them..
ReplyDeleteFun post. I loved learning about this new fruit I've never seen before. I wonder if they sell them anywhere in the US.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Kimberly. I think someone commented on my Facebook page that they had bought them in US. But I don't know which part of US would that be.
DeleteI've never heard of these before! My dad always peels regular grapes, so these would be great for him!
ReplyDeleteI'm sure he would love them, Stacey. And if he would peel them anyways, there's no extra work.
DeleteI've never seen or heard of these before but they look delicious!
ReplyDeleteIt takes a lot of work to enjoy these! I learned about something new today - I LOVE your blog!!
ReplyDeleteThank you! It's not so much work, the skin peels of really easily. It's messy though, I always get the juice all over me. But it's worth it :)
DeleteI love grapes and these look delicious. The name is just a little bit intimidating to me! I definitely would try them!
ReplyDeleteWe say in Finland, "the name doesn't make the man any worse, if the man doesn't make the name worse first" :)
DeleteIt looks good! I'll take your word on it being worth the bleeding. ;) I always learn something new about your culture every time I come! Thank you for sharing!
ReplyDeleteThank you, Heather. I'm glad you enjoyed the post.
DeleteI LOVE fresh fruit! These grapes really do look delicious. Thanks for sharing :)
ReplyDeleteThose look good. Never tried them before.I often buy fruits people here don't know, at the Hispanic markets.
ReplyDeleteooo These look yummy! I wonder if you can find them anywhere in the states? I love seeing the things you post from Ecuador :)
ReplyDeleteThank you, Christine. Someone wrote on my FB page that they had bought them in the States. Not sure who it was...
DeleteWow, I have never tried those before. I would would to try them.
ReplyDeleteThose look amazing! This last summer I was able to go muscat grape picking here in Southern Virginia. Do they make jam or wine out of jungle grapes?
ReplyDeleteI haven't heard about any wine or jam, Elisebet. I need to start asking. But I'm quite sure there's no wine.
DeleteThat's interesting that the outside is so rough. I'd try this, and I bet love it too. I love hearing about the different foods (even the worms, haha) where you're living. It's really very interesting!
ReplyDeleteThank you! I'm glad you enjoyed the post :) (even the worms ;) LOL)
DeleteWhat a really interesting fruit! I have never hard of these before, and would totally be willing to try them, though the sandpaper texture and bleeding tongue imagery is kind of putting me off.
ReplyDeleteThe important thing is to peel it first. I get a bit too anxious to eat them and don't peel them well enough and end with a very painful tongue. A good lesson what NOT to do, lol
DeleteThey look very similar to the regular grapes. I bet I would enjoy these too, I really like grapes.
ReplyDeleteThey look very similar to the regular grapes. I bet I would enjoy these too, I really like grapes.
ReplyDeleteWow amazing! Just like black berries, we have like that but that on is like citrus like inside. My saliva is drooling!
ReplyDeleteSeems scary, but I would be willing to try them
ReplyDeletei have never seen anything like this before! Love grapes!
ReplyDeleteI have never seen grapes like these! They look very exotic! Thanks for sharing!!
ReplyDeleteI'm all over any kind of fruit. Never seen this before. Wonder if they are like the grapes Joshua found in the promise land.
ReplyDeleteWow I can't believe I've never heard of this fruit before. I would definitely like to try them.
ReplyDeleteI never try them and probably not try
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing

I tend not to leave a response, however I browsed a few of the comments on this page
ReplyDelete"Jungle grapes". I do have 2 questions for you
if it's allright. Is it just me or do a
few of these remarks look as if they are coming from brain dead
visitors? :-P And, if you are writing on other online sites,
I'd like to keep up with everything new you have to post.
Would you post a list of all of your public sites
