The Queen With The Frozen Heart - Riding The Storm

Sisa whispered to the wind and asked it to carry her words to Amarun.

- It is me, she told him, me riding a top you. Me trying to stay alive and find you. Remember who you are, don’t let the beast win you!

Amarun flew through the sky and the lightnings followed him wherever he went.

The warriors cowed in pouring rain around the jaguarmen’s cave.

Hidden in the rain they searched any sign that Iluku and Killa had survived and managed to save the king and his men.

The sky on top of them was a blaze of Amarun’s rage and hunger.

He screamed his anger to the wind and Sisa trapped it inside her magic and threw it away.

Little by little her words lulled the monster and it started to fly lower and lower.

Looking for a place where to land.

The men hid inside the bushes and feared for the worst.

They knew the stories of old, of the hunger of the feathered snakes and how they loved human flesh.

It wouldn’t do for the king to be saved from the teeth of the jaguars just to be eaten by his own son!

They did not know what to do, and still there was no sign of Iluku.

The two jaguarmen guarding the caves door watched the sky with similar alarm.

They rose a huge cry when Amarun landed in front of the cave entrance and attacked him with their spears.

- No, don’t harm him, Sisa tried to shout them.

But she was too late.

The jaguar warriors tried to attack the monster with their spears but Amarun snapped them from their hands.

With the rapid movement of his head he bit one of the men in half and broke the neck of the other with his tail.

Still the warriors kept their places in the jungle.

They had given their word to Iluku.

And it wouldn’t do for her to escape the cave just to be eaten by the monster.

Through the wind they could hear the woman on top of the monster singing.

She sang of the jungle and the blue rivers, of the green leaves and huge skies above it all.

Of the animals that live in jungle and in the rivers and how their lives are all tangled with the humans living right next to them.

Of how everything had its place, everything was needed; nothing was without a use, or not to be respected.

Little by little the monster’s head lowered nearer to the ground and its eyes closed.

It sighed wearily and finally hid its head under its wing.

Sisa kept singing although her throat hurt and working her magic, deeper and deeper into the monster that was her beloved.

To be continued...

    1. That is one of the principles of Kichwa culture. Even though the sentence is mine, the idea belongs to them.
