Conductors of the new life

C. S. Lewis says “The perfect surrender and humiliation were undergone by Christ: perfect because He was God, surrender and humiliation because He was man”.

The Christian belief is that if we can share the humility and suffering of Christ, we also can share in His conquest of death and find a new life after we have died and in it become perfect, and perfectly happy, creatures.

When outsiders who have never heard of God’s law follow it more or less by instinct, they confirm its truth by their obedience. They show that God’s law is not something alien, imposed on us from without, but woven into the very fabric of our creation. There is something deep within them that echoes God’s yes and no, right and wrong. Their response to God’s yes and no will become public knowledge on the day God makes his final decision about every man and woman. The Message from God that I proclaim through Jesus Christ takes into account all these differences.
Romans 2:14-16

And this means so much more than just trying to follow His teaching.

Human curiosity often wonders what will be the next step in evolution.

But in Christian view, that step has already happened.

In Christ a new kind of man has appeared, and the new kind of life which began in Him is to be put into us also.

“Because you’re not yet taking God seriously,” said Jesus. “The simple truth is that if you had a mere kernel of faith, a poppy seed, say, you would tell this mountain, ‘Move!’ and it would move. There is nothing you wouldn’t be able to tackle.”
Matthew 17:20
And how does this happen?

According to C. S. Lewis, “There are three things that spread the Christ-life to us: baptism, belief and that mysterious action which different Christians call by different names – Holy Communion, the Mass, the Lord’s Supper”.

I don’t know why these things should be the conductors of the new kind of life.

But there are many things that I do not know.

I just need to take the reality as it comes.

But that’s no life for you. You learned Christ! My assumption is that you have paid careful attention to him, been well instructed in the truth precisely as we have it in Jesus. Since, then, we do not have the excuse of ignorance, everything—and I do mean everything—connected with that old way of life has to go. It’s rotten through and through. Get rid of it! And then take on an entirely new way of life—a God-fashioned life, a life renewed from the inside and working itself into your conduct as God accurately reproduces his character in you.
Ephesians 4:20-24
But although I don’t know the reason why it is so, I do know the reason why I believe it is so.

Because Jesus said so.

He taught His followers that the new life is communicated this way.

I believe it because of His authority, because I believe in Him.

And that is the only way to believe it.

To trust that what He says is the truth.

Then Jesus turned to the Jews who had claimed to believe in him. “If you stick with this, living out what I tell you, you are my disciples for sure. Then you will experience for yourselves the truth, and the truth will free you.”
John 8:31-32
